My students need lower level high interest chapter books. My Weird School and the other book series are great tools to grab reluctant readers to pull them in to a life long love of reading.
I teach Special Education in a rural school that is 100% free lunch. My students are faced with many obstacles living in a smaller rural community. One of the obstacles are access to high interest books. These students struggle with reading already and to be required to read books they consider boring is truly torture for them.
One of the keys to helping a struggling reader is giving them access to books they can and want to read.
Our library does not offer enough lower reading level books that are not "baby-ish."
My Project
Simply put is to get books in my student's hands. These high interest books will help motivate my students to read. They are reluctant readers and I feel that if I can help find books they are interested in they will begin to want to read. My student fill out a an interest survey at the beginning of the year. This allows me to find books they will want, maybe need to read. Right now I buy a book & read it while my class reads their library books during self sustained reading time. I laugh out loud when I read something funny in hopes of catching their attention. I often tell them what was going on in the book that made me laugh. After I read the book, often before I finish it, I let someone borrow it. I can't afford to buy more than one or two book a month.
Getting more books into our classroom means getting more books into the hands of our students.
When we receive these books my students will get them immediately. I won't be the teacher who holds on to them until I feel they're ready. The students will devour them as soon as they enter the room. Actually they will probably be the ones getting the box opened and unpacked. They will make sure my name is written in the front of and they will start reading. Although my students are not reading on their grade level, I believe they need to read as much as they want to. Your generosity will all them to do just that.
When Hurricane Harvey hit last year many of our students were flooded out of their homes & lost everything. It has been a hard year of recovery for our communities and I just want to provide a small escape for them in the form of a book. Having these books in our classroom means I can lend them out to anyone who ask.
