This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is in the heart of an urban community and includes a diverse group of students. My students are eager and excited to learn even though our students often face many challenges outside of school. My students are 99% free and reduced price lunch and many of our students receive weekly counseling to support the social and emotional needs as well as the challenges in their lives. They come to school with different life experiences, backgrounds and learning styles – each student in our class has unique needs we strive to meet every day!
My Project
My students spend time reading daily and have the opportunity each week to pick out their own books. It’s easy for students to find reading tedious when they are not interested in what they are reading. I want my students to build their own library and a love of reading based on the books they like. Research shows how important it is for students to be reading LOTS of books to expand their vocabulary and fluency. My goal is to have them exposed to and reading different types of books throughout the year during independent reading and instruction.
I believe including more diverse and engaging picture and chapter books will improve student interest and skills in reading.
3rd grade is a complex time for readers as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn and it’s easy to be frustrated and lose that love. It’s vital to have books that students love to cultivate their interest in reading and as teachers, we want to see that LOVE OF READING grow!
