My students need novels like The Westing Game that will not only spark their imaginations, but will also expand their vocabulary and their love for reading.
I teach in a racially diverse, low-income, high poverty school district in Ohio. Over 90% percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. There are students in my class who deal with issues pre-teens shouldn't have to face such as losing a parent to drugs or incarceration. They have varying learning abilities so I provide small group instruction to make sure their learning needs are met. It's important to me that each student receives the support they need in order to be successful and to feel they are an important part of the classroom.
Although my students have difficult obstacles to conquer daily, they come to school with an eagerness to learn.
School opens up a world of opportunity for them! My students enjoy reading and they prefer books that spark their imaginations and take them to places that are unlike their lives at home.
I absolutely love teaching and could not imagine doing anything else! I love challenging my students and pushing them to achieve their academic goals. My students aren't just students...they are my kids!
My Project
My students enjoy reading, but unfortunately funds are not available to provide class sets of books. I have borrowed books from other teachers in the past, but several students would end up sharing one book because there weren't enough to go around.
My students are a diverse bunch and they deserve books that have diverse characters they can relate to.
In order to encourage students to read more, we have to provide them with interesting reading material. The stories found in Literature books are not very interesting and my students have a hard time connecting with the material. Your generous donation will expose my students to stories they may never have the opportunity to read.
