Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing people who always try their best to do well in school. They are motivated individuals who face many adversities yet continue to strive in order to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. The majority of our student population is from a low socioeconomic background and many of their parents are field workers. Many of my students participate in community service, while the others through school clubs organize food and toy drives as well as fundraise to give back to the community. They are very deserving!
My Project
My students need more book options to engage in independent reading outside of classroom time. Every year I find myself encouraging them to read and constantly showing them books that I have in my classroom library. Because my students are constantly reading, the books get worn out and unfortunately that discourages students. I motivate them by introducing recently published books that are hot on the Young Adult reading lists during the year. They feel encouraged to read when they pick up a new story, a new book. Books are powerful tools to help them understand the world and develop their critical thinking skills.
