My students need new genre of books so they can complete their 40 book challenge. The science books will be used for both reading and science. Bins are to hold books.
My classroom is always buzzing with students learning. I have practiced the Daily 5 method for reading and math. Each morning they check out books on an app with our classroom librarian. Then we all read undisturbed for 20 minutes. I want them to be life long readers by the end of the year.
My students are fourth graders this year.
They are eager learners. So much that I moved up with them from 3rd to 4th. They hold great conversations about themes of books with each other and myself. They are very active. Most are on an outside of school sports team. They have a love for reading that keeping my classroom library fresh. They are participating in a 40 book challenge of several different genres. This idea came from the book The Book Whisperer. We are a Title 1 school. The majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch and free breakfast. Half of my students have a learning disability that makes reading fluently very difficult.
My Project
I want to implement the way of The Book Whisperer this year in reading, where my students are required to read 40 books in the year with a certain number per genre. The different book sets will give each child a choice in what they want to read to complete the challenge. They will learn the reading strategy provided by our district while reading a book of their choice on their Lexiles number. I chose to select the fluency package to aid in their success of getting better at reading fluently. My students enjoy learning and participating in science. Then they love using that information to write informative stories. For this reason I selected books focused on their science curriculum, STC Literacy Series: Land and Water, and
STC Literacy Series: Electric Circuits.
I am very excited to see their progress this year.
Your donations will help me help my students grab that love for reading and recognize the different genres that are out there.
Hopefully open their eyes to new authors and series of books that they normally would not choose to read. Then write a recommendation for their classmates. In addition they will improve their public speaking by giving a book talk. I want them leaving with their reading skills changed for life.
