Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students really enjoy reading. They often times want to get out of their seats and find a place to read besides their desk. I allow them to read sitting on top of their desk, at my desk and on the carpet, but only if it is clean. It would be really cool if they could read using beanbags in class.

Although 100% of our students qualify for free and or reduced lunch, if you were to ever visit our school you would never know their Title 1 status.

Our students come to school each and every day with a thirst for knowledge and a desire fueled by passion to learn more about our ever-changing world. Despite living in some challenging neighborhoods in one of the largest cities in the southeastern area of the country, our students do not let uncontrollable distractions interfere with their education. Our school has been the cornerstone of the community for decades and we insist as educators on pushing our students to their greatest potential on a daily basis. Although we have limited resources being a Title 1 school, we have bright students who thrive to showcase their unlimited potential on a daily basis.

My Project

The 24 High Interest Reading Centers, Informational Text and other games, 3 Beanbag Seats, and other items that I am requesting for this project will have a life altering impact on student achievement in the area of Reading. Not only will my students understand the importance of being a fluent reader who is able to comprehend what is read, they will also learn that reading can be enjoyable. I use video clips in class to engage my students in the lesson(s) or show them a commercial to help them better understand Main Idea and supporting details of the commercial, they often notice that the people in the clips are not reading at a desk, nor are they reading in the form of punishment. They see others reading in coffee shops, at the park, on the bus, or relaxing at home on the sofa with a good book learning and enhancing their individual lives. This is what I envision for my students using these resources from this project. I see them learning that reading is a tool that will offer them endless opportunities if they find the importance and the fulfillment of being an avid reader.

Your donations to this project will improve our classroom by offering students a new perspective about reading.

I want my students to have the same enjoyment that many people around the world have when they're reading for leisure as well as obtaining knowledge. With your generosity to this project you will begin to unlock doors of opportunity for my students for years to come.
