Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are recently arrived immigrants to the United States who are all English language learners. Many of them have had limited formal education in their countries, some of whom are illiterate in their native languages, and now they are thrust into a high school environment in a language that is unfamiliar to them.

Even though some of my students have jobs that require them to work until 1 or 2 in the morning, they still show up for school every day, ready to learn because they recognize the importance of education.

My Project

My students are several years below grade level so they have great difficulty understanding the books they regularly encounter at school. The books in this project will give students the opportunity to read books that they find appealing that are at their reading level. In addition, the read-alongs will allow students to develop better reading fluency.

Many of my students are not in the habit of reading for pleasure, and that is something that needs to change.

As most of the books that we currently have in the classroom are too advanced for students to read independently, it is very important that students have access to books that they can read. The books requested in this project will do exactly that - show students that reading can be fun and enjoyable and that they CAN read.
