Diverse is one of many words that describes my second grade students. My students come from rural and urban areas. They come from different cultures with different values, poverty stricken neighborhoods, and the countryside. They are an eclectic group of individuals that have learned to work together even when their opinions vary.
Unity is what I strive to teach in my classroom.
My students work as a team to meet individual and team goals. We work cooperatively and learn from each other. One student’s success, however great or small, impacts the entire class as we celebrate all achievements. My students are adventurous, intelligent, witty, imaginative, and resourceful.
But my students all have one thing in common, an interest in reading! They are intrigued at the possibilities of being so engrossed in a book that you become part of the characters and their adventures. I want them to be able to learn from characters’ experiences and the morals that are rooted into the story line. “Books are a passport to all kinds of knowledge, intelligence and wisdom,” – Dr. T. P. Chia.
My Project
Students will be using Kindles to access books on their interest level. They will write a summary of their favorite part of the book and what they learned, then, share it with the class. They can highlight their favorite quotes, make notes or comments, and bookmark pages for easy access and sharing.
I believe that the Kindle eReaders will help spark a love for reading within my students.
They will have a range of reading levels and genres at their fingertips. My students will gain knowledge from reading to apply to real world experiences. This piece of technology would open a world of new adventures and possibilities for my students.
