Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 5th grade students come from many diverse backgrounds, with more than 80 percent speaking English as a second language. My students speak a variety of languages at home, including Spanish, Arabic, Tongan, Burmese, Somali, Vietnamese, and more! More than 95% of my students receive free lunch and are met with unique challenges of living in poverty on a daily basis. Despite these hardships, these children work hard to overcome these challenges and learn.
These children are happy, loving, hard-working, inquisitive, creative, eager to learn and excited to be at school.
My Project
5th grade is a pivotal time in a student's life. Students are finding their own interests, reading proficiently, and learning how to research topics. They are able to make choices about their learning in new and exciting ways.
My students need a wealth of non-fiction books to help fuel a passion of reading informational texts while learning about the world around them.
My classroom also needs an easel to help guide our classroom discussions and mini-lessons. With the easel, we will be able to sit together on the rug and read, write, and be able to see each other's thinking through the use of the easel.
