Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin.
My 5th grade students come from high poverty with many living well below the poverty line.
A lot of my students are at risk and may not have all the tools necessary to be successful. We cater to a high Hispanic population where English is the second language to most. They are sweet, energetic, outgoing and enthusiastic - and more than two thirds of them enter 5th grade reading significantly below grade level.
My Project
The resources I am requesting are reading comprehension materials such as high interest reading passages, graphic organizers, a variety of nonfiction and fiction texts and intervention activities that I will be able to better implement when working with my lower performing students during small group instruction. I am also requesting writing supplies to help my English Language Learners become more fluent in their writing.
The majority of my students come from homes with no books, no supplies, and no support.
I am not only their teacher, but also their counselor, mother and most importantly, their biggest fan. With so many of them entering 5th grade two or more grade levels below, it is my job as an educator to make sure that they have the means necessary to succeed. Your donation will help not just the students this year, but students in the years to come become more proficient in Reading and Writing.
