Our population is culturally diverse, with students coming from all around the world. This is one of the things that makes my job so much fun! They speak many different languages and some don't speak any English when they join our class.
I teach in a smaller school in which 96% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch and the majority are ELL.
Because we are a smaller school, we often lack funding for learning tools. These students are resilient and come to school every day to learn new things. They work hard and want to learn skills that will help them reach their hopes and dreams for a bright future. These students are also filled with enthusiastic energy. They are kind, friendly, and are excited to be at school.
There are currently 24 students in my class. My students come mainly from Thailand, Burma, Somalia, and Mexico. This group of students are inquisitive and love to learn using hands-on activities. We are working on learning skills for their future.
My Project
I am a lifelong learner that is always looking for new and innovative ways to bring literacy instruction to my students. I have been teaching for 25 years and still continue to look for refreshing activities and new ways to instruct my students in literacy. Jen provides this kind professional development.
Preparing students for the 21st century means preparing students for their future.
I know that I will use the instructional ideas to teach my students in small and large group instruction. I will learn about newer literature that I can share with my students and how to pull out teaching points to use the books as teaching tools. This will also be a refresher for strategies that I can use to help struggling readers. I will use strategies I learn in guided reading and one to one with students.
This literacy professional development will help me instruct students in new and effective ways. I love the hands-on approach that Jen uses. The professional development provides activities and instructional strategies that I can start using the next day.
