The students like to have hands-on experiences, such as pretend play, building, reading and exploring. Students in my classroom are at-risk and low income. Fifteen of the sixteen students either don't speak English or have limited English. Many of them have come from war-torn countries. These things may be a deterrent to getting ahead and being a success in life.
Many of our students do not have life experiences that many of us see as typical.
Few have access to books, toys or technology in their home environment. Many experience school as their first exposure to the world outside their family environment.
As they walk in my classroom we focus on the students in a positive and creative manner. These students have great potential for growth in the right environment. Although we may not be able to control their home lives, their experience during the school day can be enhanced by providing a safe place for their academic learning. We strive to inspire our earliest learners to academic excellence and success.
My Project
To develop language, vocabulary and prior knowledge, children need to hear the written word. By providing the multiple copies and big books requested, students will be given the opportunity to explore and read familiar stories while developing a love of reading.
Preschool students need repetition in order to develop language and build prior knowledge.
Our program requires multiple readings of books. After the readings, several copies are available to the students to explore and read to each other. It is amazing to see four year old children reading to each other, even though English is their second language. This project will enrich literacy and language in our classroom.
