In the past, I have been fortunate enough to attend the Summer Reading Institute at Columbia University in New York City through personal funding. I am fortunate to have just begun my fourteenth year of teaching. The state in which I work has struggled with budget cuts and revenue shortfalls, and in turn professional development continues to fall on the individual teacher.
As a veteran teacher, I continually strive to learn and grow as a teacher leader and learner of literacy.
The learning during my professional development continues to influence the teaching of literacy in my classroom as well as strengthen my love of literacy learning both as an educator and learner.
My Project
I currently use Lucy Calkin's Units of Study for Reading and Writing to teach literacy in my Kindergarten classroom. I look forward to having access to the Units of Study Phonics to strengthen my literacy block and teaching. This resource will help meet the needs of learners both in whole group and small group.
These professional resources, What's the Best That Can Happen and The Children You Teach, will allow me to look at the intention of my teaching to best meet the needs of the learners in my classroom as well as contribute to my growth as a teacher leader and learner.
What's the Best That Can Happen? With funding in Oklahoma, teachers can continue to grow and learn despite the state of education.
