This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low socioeconomic area with disadvantaged students located in the inner city of Atlanta, GA. Many students are not provided with the resources needed for academic success due to the challenges of poverty and low parental involvement.
Despite challenges outside of the classroom, my students still come to school eager to learn.
This is what makes them special. As they walk through the doors of our school each morning, they pledge to do their best. My number one goal is to provide them with the necessary tools that will help them succeed and reach their full potential. They are the future and deserve a quality education.
My Project
A large block of phonics instruction is spent teaching relationships between letters and their sounds. The various puzzles and word building pieces will help reinforce beginning, middle, and ending sounds. They will also reinforce words with certain blends and digraphs. These will make a difference in their learning, because it will give them multiple opportunities to practice blending sounds together.
Sight word recognition is another vital piece of our literacy block, and students should know at least 50 sight words by the end of kindergarten.
The sight word games, such as the fishing game, will allow them to practice the first 25 words in a more engaging way. The colorful magnetic board will help them practice forming simple sentences with sight words.
These games will reinforce phonics skills in a fun way. There are many phonics and language skills that kindergarteners should be able to master by the end of the year in order to be on the right path for reading success throughout their school journey. These games will keep them engaged and give them lots of practice with those skills. The activities are age appropriate and will allow them to be able to work independently while I work with small guided reading groups.
