My students need books for our classroom library that they will actually want to read.
Do you remember sitting in English class and being forced to read books that you aren't interested in and cannot connect with? Our students are given a half hour a day to improve their reading, but they hate it because they can't find any books they want to read.
I am a Social Studies teacher at a college preparatory high school in an urban school district.
Our school tries to prepare students for higher levels of education by reinforcing the requirements to being a successful student, such as the ability to read on grade level. Many of my students are not motivated to read because they feel that the books we give them are "boring" and have nothing to do with them. During our required reading time, I end up being more of a police officer because the students act out due to their lack of interest in reading and, for some of them, their inability to read in the first place. I have tried many things, but they hate reading. I tell them that any career you could ever have requires you to read, but they still lack motivation. I know that reading is the key to getting them on the right path, but some of them feel that they are so behind that there's no reason to try. I have more than 75% of my students not reading on grade level.
I am requesting a series of books in teen literature to spark their interest in the wonderful world that reading can open up to them. My students feel that the literature we provide for them doesn't connect with their lives and that reading is boring because it has nothing to do with them. I am requesting a series of books that deal with real issues that they go through every day. I want them to see that not all literature is about White, middle class people, and they can relate to books. If I can interest them in these texts then maybe I can introduce them to other more classical literature. I want my students not to fear reading. I want them to enjoy it and see what it can really do for them. These books will open the door for my students to improve their reading skills and just generally enjoy reading again. If they can enjoy to read, then everything else will come easier to them and get them back on the road to college. Reading is the key to closing the achievement gap in our schools.
There is nothing more important in school than reading.
I am a Social Studies teacher, but there is not a single subject that doesn't require a student to read. I want my students to grow in confidence to tackle written materials in any curriculum. I want my students to see that reading is actually the "cool thing to do," instead of running away from it because they feel they are behind. Supporting reading is supporting our country's future.
