Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching kindergarten at my school for 22 years. Every day, I am greeted by 27 wonderful, smiling faces. I feel lucky to have a job that I love. Our community has been through a lot these past two years with the fires that swept through Sonoma County and now distance learning. School is the one place that they can come on a daily basis and know that they are safe! My school population is very diverse and challenging, but I wouldn't have it any other way! We are a Title I school, with 94% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of my students do not even come with a backpack or supplies. I usually spend a significant amount of my own money buying supplies for the entire year.
My Project
Inchy's Bookworm Vending machine works by using a positive reward-based system to help encourage students to read more! Children have the opportunity to earn gold tokens to be used to vend their favorite book. How cool is that? Many other schools have seen their engagement rates with literacy skyrocket and kids are racing to the vending machine to get their next book! I would love to keep this vending machine stocked with all of the latest titles that students help choose and replenish. My goal is to have this up and running when students return to our campus! This is a school-wide project that will benefit over 400 kids. Please help me give our students the opportunity to get more books in their hands!
