I teach at a school where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students face many challenges in and out of the classroom. These challenges do not deter my resolve to provide my students with quality learning experiences.
My students are smart, creative and vivacious.
They come to school ready to learn despite their many obstacles. Our program focuses on first generation students to complete an Associate's degree and high school diploma within five years. Regardless of whether a student obtains both diplomas in five years, I am proud to say that any child that receives their high school diploma is a success. Many of these students are at risk of dropping out at a traditional school; however, most of our students get their high school diploma and college credit.
Knowing what many of my students face on a daily basis, I try to provide creative lessons to encourage them to take a risk in their learning. I never know what that spark will be for each individual child, I only hope that I provide that moment where they feel successful.
My Project
Color cardstock and table top flip charts are basic classroom items that are used to get students to make connections to their learning. Making foldables with cardstock, and having students create roller coasters to demonstrate kinetic and potential energy are a few ways I use cardstockin my classroom. The flip charts are used for students to create a "brain dump" of their ideas about a subject matter and then process and refine their learning.
These items are basic classroom items but have an impact in the classroom.
Students need to explore, ask questions and clarify their thinking and learning. Sometimes the most basic tools can have the biggest impact on learning.
