On any given day, at any given time, my class is filled with eager, excited, and enthusiastic 5th and 6th graders! My students are avid readers and love digging into engaging text.
My students are living in a time when cuts to classroom budgets are commonplace and money for curriculum is rare.
My district's last Language Arts curriculum adoption was over 15 years ago. This means my students are working with outdated reading materials and texts on topics that aren't necessary relevant to them.
To help keep my readers engaged and motivated, I am always looking for materials and texts that are current, interesting, and support students while they work on the Common Core Standards for their grade level. As an ELA teacher for both my 5th and 6th graders, this can be a real challenge. Last year, I was introduced to StoryWorks from Scholastic. The resource was amazing and so helpful to me as a teacher and motivating for my students. Unfortunately, because of a lack of funding, I was not able to renew the subscription for my students for the upcoming school year. I need your help to bring this worthwhile resource back for my students.
My Project
Having a classroom subscription to StoryWorks magazine will be a HUGE benefit for my students. Each issue is packed full of relevant material for my 5th and 6th graders. Each magazine includes nonfiction articles based on current events and relevant topics. The nonfiction text helps my students connect to other cultures and perspectives. Also included are paired texts, infographics, grammar and language articles and scripts. My students LOVE the scripts. Students get excited to get into groups and work together to practice their lines.
StoryWorks also includes online elements including differentiated articles, videos, read-alouds, and comprehension quizzes that can be uploaded to Google Classroom which is a HUGE time saver for this teacher!
