My students are advanced learners in a Cambridge/Gifted program. They come from a variety of backgrounds and many different types of households. They are bright and curious, and they desire to expand their knowledge beyond the basic information offered by our superficial textbook.
They are hard workers, and they are a lot of fun to teach!
Every day, they teach me almost as much as I teach them. They are great at discussion and are unafraid to wrestle with complicated issues. Furthermore, they have a thirst for connecting history to the lives they are leading today.
I am thankful every day for the opportunity to teach these students. However, we are a woefully underfunded Title I school, and my students suffer from a lack of technological enrichment that would greatly expand their curriculum. When we try to access online resources, my poor students are forced to use a handful of computers older than they are.
My Project
An iPad can make a huge difference in my students' lives. Currently, they are unable to peruse their own curiosities due to our lack of classroom technology. This new technology will allow students to discover answers to their own questions about history and its impact on our society and culture today. When a student's curiosity is ignited he or she benefits greatly from being able to discover the answers quickly. They will be able to do this with iPad technology.
Further, it will allow weekly Jeopardy style competitions via Kahoot!
This is a great review and study tool that has been shown to cement understanding and boost student scores on assessments.
