Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade classroom is comprised of 27 creative and enthusiastic students. They are eager to express themselves through writing, speaking, art projects, and inquiry based learning. My students are working on adding more art, science, and technology standards to our language arts and math lessons for a deeper connection to the material. Additionally, groups work better when they can move around the classroom and learn from different environments.
Almost all of our class comes from low-income homes with little to no access for a creative outlet.
What we complete in class is often the only time they use art supplies, have access to readily available books, and receive immediate praise. Building a community of kindness and academics isimportant to my students, and we are excited to work on projects that allow us to do so.
My Project
Instilling a love of reading is what I strive for everyday in my classroom. My second grade students love chapter books although most are beyond their reading levels. Finding book series that they both enjoy and are broken into chapters for this age group can be difficult. Both of these wonderfully written book series bring to life characters that they think are funny and plots they can comprehend.
These two book series, Mr. Putter & Tabby and Henry & Mudge, are the perfect combination for my students of engagement and rigor.
After reading one of the books in this series, my students ask every single day if we can read another one or if I have any more. I would love to tell them I have many to choose from so they continue this excitement.
