Beautiful and curious. Eager and energetic. Unique in their individual personalities. All of the children that I work with have been identified as having special needs, and require extra support, specific strategies, and interventions, and all qualify for specialized educational services. Most of the children also receive special therapy such as speech and language, physical therapy, and/or occupational therapy.
Many of the children that I work with live in high poverty areas, and lack access to rich literature in their home.
All can benefit from access to high quality books which coordinate with the books read in the classroom, in order to carry over and extend these learning experiences.
My Project
These delightful and beautifully illustrated classic children's books will be sent home in our classroom "Book in a Bag" backpacks. The families will be provided with information on: the importance of reading everyday, tips on how to read to preschoolers, suggestions for modifying storytime for children with special needs and a journal- to share a few words or a drawing depicting their child's favorite part of the story. These books will be used during upcoming themes of "Vroom Vroom" (a theme about transportation), and "Backyard Detective" (a theme about the joy of learning and discovery outdoors.
