I teach 22 bright-eyed and sweet second graders. Their love and enthusiasm for learning this year has me motivated to be the best I can be. Second grade is a crucial time to instill a love of learning and reading. As a primary teacher, one of my main goals is to immerse my students in good literature. Second graders seem to choose smaller books, as the longer chapter books are too intimidating.
I want to show my second graders that they are capable of reading bigger books and building their reading stamina.
I know they will jump right in with the eagerness and passion these student have for learning. This project will also benefit other second graders, as I will be using the materials during our small group intervention time.
My Project
Even our little learners need to be challenged! These book sets will help me facilitate novel studies with our highest level 2nd graders. I will be able to engage these little bookworms in high quality literature while teaching them important reading skills and strategies. Challenging these already higher level learners with excellent novels will aide in developing deeper metacognition, comprehension and fluency.
Reading an award winning book like The One and Only Ivan will also teach my students compassion and empathy towards animals and living creatures.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a favorite book of mine from elementary school. I will love to be able to share this love with my students.
