Our students range from 9-12th graders who are struggling readers due to a multitude of reasons. Many come into high school not having a love of reading because of failed experiences and lack of engagement. We want to build a classroom library that fosters a love of reading and inspires students to make independent reading choices in order to spark their interest.
We would like to find books that are of high interest at a variety of reading levels.
We know that when our students walk in and see all of these differentiated texts, they will know that their teachers are invested in their lifelong education.
Our students don't always connect with the classic literature in our curriculum; however, when they pick up a book like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, we know that they will relate to a teenager trying to navigate the everyday struggles of high school. We also know that whole class instruction is not beneficial for every student. The books in our order will be individualized for each student here.
Our students will connect to the characters in these modern, high-interest novels and see the true benefits of becoming well-read when they participate in both independent reading and book club settings.
