Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a very low socioeconomic area where more than 98% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch.
The large majority of my learners are ELL (English Language Learners), where at home the primary language spoken is either Spanish or Creole.
My students come to school every day ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day. Some are unable to receive help at home, so for most of my students, all of their learning takes place in the classroom. Fifth grade is a difficult grade for most students in my classroom. My classroom is an advanced level class and it is my job to push them above and beyond the norms. My students need to be pushed beyond the poverty line so they are prepared for the competition of academic success in middle school.
Many of my students have had very limited experiences in the real world. Having very little background experiences makes it harder to connect to learning. It is my job as their teacher to expose them to as many experiences as possible to give them the chance to be successful!
My Project
Common Core has brought a new level of rigor to the classroom and to student learning. I have the privilege of teaching the gifted class, where my students love to read. I have a variety of different leveled readers in my classroom. Unfortunately I do not have access to the large amount of higher level books that my students need to succeed in reading.
I need to update my classroom library to meet the needs of my eager gifted students.
My students love to read and constantly have a book in their hands. Some students go through one book in just a day or two. I need to update my classroom library with new and exciting books.
I cannot wait to see my students and future students enjoy our new books!
