Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As Dr. Seuss says, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” My students are very energetic. They love to interact and socialize with one another! I use that love to promote a passion for reading, academic conversations, and exploration through hands on projects.
It's amazing to see how their love for reading has grown this past year.
With the use of these bins, we can organize our classroom library by specific topics and genres. This will allow them to dive into reading even more because they will be able to quickly select books that interest them. With the use of the gift cards, I can log onto Teachers Pay Teachers and access materials that cover the topics and standards we've learned in class whether it is in reading or in mathematics. My hope is that with these resources, I can find projects that build on these topics.
I have a diverse classroom make-up this year. Our school serves over 600 students and is one of 32 schools in our district. My students come from a high poverty neighborhood. Most are very low academically. Nonetheless, they are expected to graduate with the skills necessary to succeed at a 4 year university. A high percentage of my students are at least a grade level or two behind and this must change quickly for them to succeed. Add in the COVID year that led to Virtual Learning and the educational learning gap is much larger. It is my hope to create a learning environment this year and for years to come where hands-on learning is so much fun, that it supersedes any barrier and encourages students to advance academically through intrinsic motivators.
