Help me give my students the opportunity to truly take flight in an in-depth inquiry unit about birds, encompassing reading, research, art, and observation.
My 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students come from the surrounding local communities, are of different ethnic backgrounds, are of many varied economic backgrounds, have different beliefs, and are engaged, creative learners starting their academic journey at a fairly new charter school. Together, these students observe, question, collaborate, communicate, and create! Reading and being read to is a highlight for these students. Since we are a new school, we do not have a library or librarian for our students to visit each week.
My Project
My students learn at a school that focuses on inquiry of a focused subject matter throughout the year. These students will start the year with a focus on birds as an important part of ecosystem. Through a study of birds students will be immersed in the steps of inquiry: observation, exploration, and exposition (showing what they've learned). All the while, students continue to observe, ask questions, and research. Students will learn about birds on bird hikes, through reading informational texts and articles, and by videos. Art will be created, as well as performance/presentation to share our learning with others at our school and our community.
