For Peer Tutors, Building Relationships Is in the Bag!
Help me give my students themed items for goodie bags including high-quality wooden pencils, wristbands, stampers, notepads, bouncy balls, stress balls, bookmarks, bookmark tassels, Lifesavers, and erasers.

My peer tutors demonstrate caring "a whole awful lot" in small and big ways, assisting my younger and at-risk students socially, behaviorally, and academically.
I am a school counselor at a public, K-5 school in Tennessee. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing classroom guidance and individual and small-group counseling services. Much of my work involves teaching students life skills and encouraging character development. Helping others and demonstrating personal responsibility are two skills that I highlight through my peer tutor program. Peer tutors help students who are struggling academically with their work. Each Wednesday morning, peer tutors go to their study buddies' classrooms and provide 20-30 minutes of tutoring. Building meaningful relationships and encouraging those who are struggling are at the heart of this program, literally and figuratively!
My Project
I train my peer tutors how to build meaningful relationships with the students they serve. To reinforce these relationships, peer tutors make goodie bags for their study buddies several times a year. These bags include several "cool" items, as well as coupons from local eateries or other treats. In December, January, and February, peer tutors will give Winter, 100th Day of School, and Valentine's-themed bags to their study buddies. They will make cards and decorate the bags. The tangible items requested here (pencils, wristbands, notepads, stampers, bouncy balls, stress balls, erasers, bookmarks, bookmark tassels, and Lifesavers) will be used to fill the goodie bags. The tutors will present the bags to their study buddies when they go for their tutoring session the week before Winter Break, and the weeks of our 100th Day of School and Valentine's Day. These fun bags send a message of caring. When paired with the peer tutors' words of encouragement and the time they spend practicing math facts, reading, or other skills with their buddies, study buddies make important academic progress!
The at-risk students served by the peer tutors do better because they are befriended by someone who cares "a whole awful lot" about them.
The various items used to fill the decorated goodie bags made possible through this project will serve as reminders of their successes. In the process, my peer tutors learn important lessons about responsibility and reaching out to those in need.
