My students love to learn through literature studies! They are eager to read and discuss their reading during class discussions where they present evidence and share their insights. My students make connections with characters and the character's experiences through the stories that they have read. We discuss the "what if's" or "how they would have handled it differently." As a teacher I use different modalities to present literature; hands-on books, as well as audiobooks to meet the needs of each student. My school is a Title I school located in a small rural setting in Eastern Arizona, we have 6 general education teachers and a high percentage of students and families are low income.
My Project
My request is for additional copies of the high interest novel; The Westing Game. These copies will add to the current literature set that I already share between two classes. I use these novels to teach 6th grade reading and writing standards. Due to limited class time, limited number of books and students who read at different speeds, my students are not always able to keep up on reading their assigned chapters to prepare for discussions. I try to accommodate my students by putting a copy of the book as well as the audiobook version of the book online in their Google Classroom. This accommodation only works if students have internet at home or have access to a computer, which many do not have, and this causes them to fall behind.
With the extra copies of The Westing Game, my students will be able to have their own book to take home as needed.
Sharing one set of books between two classes does not always give my students the needed access to the book and allow them to complete their reading assignment.
