I am a second grade teacher in the Bronx. My children are terrific and ready learners and artists. I am responsible for their instruction in all content areas.
Art is part of our everyday lives. Using art to teach math, history, and science provides tactile and visual learning which reaches many students. Including an art activity in a properly presented lesson, students can easily understand even the most complex of ideas. Quite frankly, art across the board makes learning interesting and a fun hands-on experience.
Children often think of art as simply painting pictures. Being a "learning artist" involves so much more than that. I believe children that are given the opportunity to incorporate art into lessons will learn how to create and be encouraged to explore and take chances. Being able to take chances is a vital component of learning.
For this reason, I would like to establish a functional art center for my students. Some of the supplies requested are crayons, construction paper, drawing paper, paint, glue sticks and scissors.
As my young Rembrandts use these supplies, they will develop a special way of seeing and thinking about the world which is shared with others through the works they create. The materials will be available to all of the children in the classroom.
Learning through art encourages creativity and cultivates learning through valuable hands-on activities.
