My students need a class set (34) of "The 10 Most Memorable Speeches in American History" to become empowered with the idea that individuals can change the world.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every student should feel that they have the power to change the world. Each of the famous speeches in the books were given by people who were able to change the world. By reading these books I hope to inspire the students to greatness in their education and lives.
My students are exceptional 11th graders with incredible intellect and potential.
The majority of the students, however, were not blessed to be born with silver spoons in their mouths but have had to fight for every success that they have achieved. The high school which the students attend is 97% free or reduced lunch and is a striving school which means that it has not made Adequate Yearly Progress in recent years. Every student in my class has the potential to be an exceptional student but unfortunately has not always been given the resources or instruction that they need to succeed. My goal is to help the students feel successful in their academic endeavors and set themselves on a path to college.
Too often history is seen as a subject that his "boring" or "useless" and something that should be relegated to the past. I believe that you cannot fully understand the world within you live unless you understand the history of what made it this way. The history of the United States is one that is punctuated with the stories of exceptional individuals who were able to change their own lives and the lives of those around them. Our US history course will be organized around the idea of individuals ability to change the world and the famous speeches that they gave. Within each era in history that we are studying there will be a focal speech that the students will be analyzing and working closely with. Through this focus on speeches and individuals I hope to give the students an understanding of history, an understanding of their world and a sense that they themselves have the power to change the world if they set their mind to it.
Through using this book the students will be able to learn higher levels of analytical skills and a greater understanding of the world around them.
The book will empower the students to understand the history of their country and believe in their potential to change their own future and the future of the people around them.
