My students need math materials that will allow opportunities for greater differentiation in the classroom. The Hip Hoppin Hundreds mat will provide us endless opportunities to get up and move as we learn.
My amazing second graders love to learn and interact with one another throughout the school day. My small school is one that has a high number of students in need many of them coming from active duty military families as well as single parent homes. These student come to school every day and find that our classroom is their safe haven. They know that I will work alongside them to prepare them to be successful learners by taking time to find their strengths and address their weaknesses. I work countless hours to plan exciting lessons and activities using every available resource from our school as well as purchasing many items and supplies throughout the year to help my students.
An important component of promoting academic success is through differentiating instruction, reaching the child on their own level.
In order to reach the various levels in the classroom I am having to create activities and purchase materials that provide opportunities for active engagement in the classroom. I communicate with my parents on a weekly basis through newsletters, messages and as needed conferences; providing parents with ideas, packets and materials allowing them to assist their child at home.
This year, our school wide academic focus is on increasing our students' understanding of mathematics. Not all students learn at the same rate or in the same way, so in my classroom I am moving towards implementing guided math groups in order to better reach the needs of my students.
Guided math, like guided reading, allows the teacher to teach small groups of students focusing on their individual needs and abilities.
In order to fully implement guided math I need materials that can be used in small groups and the materials need to be engaging and able to be used at varying levels of instruction. The games and activities that I can introduce to my students using the proposed materials will teach them the math skills while also keeping their attention, resulting in making learning fun.
