This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come in eager to please and be loved. They want to be recognized for achievements through "shout-outs" and rewards. They are funny and playful. The relationships and family atmosphere we create in the classroom is always the highlight of my school year.
My school is located on the Southside of Chicago.
The neighborhood is known for violence and poverty. The school is 100% free or reduced-price lunch. It not only creates a safe haven but also teaches the students to look beyond their surroundings and reach for higher goals. We are not just trying to get them into great high schools, but great colleges.
My Project
My students, particularly the boys, just love to play football everyday at recess. However, they do not want to just play two-hand-touch. They want to tackle each other to the ground! I didn't mind it as much when the weather permitted us to have recess outside, but tackling can't happen in the gym. So, they desperately want flags!
With all that football and fun, they also need snacks in the afternoons.
It is difficult for anyone to work on an empty stomach let alone 9 and 10 year olds. We also need erasers.
Help give my students some safe fun and the sustenance they need to keep it going!
