Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of teaching all of the students in the building. I get to know them on a personal level. I also have to be strong because, in this city school district, I hear many heartbreaking stories. They have tough lives with a lot of gang activity, drug use, and family issues. I open up my classroom to many of the community organizations, so our students have somewhere else to go. I also open my classroom door to all of my students at any time, for anything. I try to introduce them to healthier lifestyle choices any way I can.
My Project
Whenever our principal gets that certain twinkle in his eye, I know we are in trouble! He has a wonderful idea to create a lounge for our students. After a huge jump in numbers concerning graduation rates and state exams, our students continue to impress us. They are dedicating hours to various volunteer organizations. It has been a stellar year and we plan on continuing this trend for years to come. With all of the positive attributes, we are also seeing a higher rate of students who are faced with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Its disheartening to see all of this positive and all of the pressure at the same time.
We want to create a student lounge where deserving students can relax for a few minutes when they need a break.
The foosball table would be great for them to release minor stress and allow them to relax for a minute after a stressful day.
