Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The level of stress my students are facing is unimaginable, more so for students who already have academic learning gaps. During this pandemic students have had a complete disruption in their learning. Students come from low income homes/shelter. What we provide in school might not be provided in their living space. Many students do not have quiet places to study, or cannot even sign-in to live remote learning classrooms. The majority of my students have access to electronic devices, with limited internet connectivity.
My Project
The materials that are the most requested are snacks (take-home foods) and materials/tools to ease social-emotional tensions.
Many of my students live in overpopulated homes, where food many times is scarce and stress is significantly high.
Students will be able to eat snacks during online learning sessions with their teacher at home. Students will be provided with stress balls during their phone counseling sessions and coloring tools for stress coping journals. The color pencils, coping materials, and snacks will show our students that they are loved and cared for and that they are being looked out for by their community, meaning you! Goal for these materials are to provide students with snacks as part of their engagement. Secondly the tools for social emotional well-being, like writing in a journal and coloring to help with their everyday stressors. Stress-balls, color-pencils which I normally have in the classroom are not accessible to neither I or the students due to school building being closed.
