I teach 7th and 8th grade English language learners at IPSNS. We serve refugees and newcomers in their first year in the United States. My students are positive, resilient and brilliant young people who articulate through their actions that education is one of the most important things to them.
Our program serves students from across the globe, speaking more than a dozen languages.
While their journeys and stories are unique, transitioning into life in the United States is not for the faint of heart. While our students express their happiness for the available opportunities, many are saddled with the weight of starting their lives from scratch.
This holiday season I would like to send 200 kids home with a bag of groceries as an added help during their 2-week break. We were able to do this during their Fall break and you could see the weight of worry lifted from their shoulders as they struggled to shoulder the bags full of food. Thank you for taking the time to hear our story!
My Project
We would like to send every family home with a bag of food during the two-week holiday break. Our school has grown from 50 students at the beginning of the year to 200 students at the start of December. These gifts will help relieve some of the stress of being away from the consistency of meals during the school day.
The items I chose in this project are food and simple snacks for the students to take with them over break.
We are also working to get some other food staples such as rice, beans, and fresh fruit to add to their bags.
