Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with an amazing set of students in an urban community that is historically underserved. These students come to class with the weight of the world on their shoulders and I am working everyday to bring some brightness and joy to the classroom. I want to make sure my students are engaged, empowered, and confident. With 9th graders I have learned that developing healthy social emotional skills is critical to their success as a student and young adult.
Often my students have a difficult time focusing in the classroom because they are hungry, stressed, feeling sick, or distracted.
I do the best I can to have basics such as pencils and food on hand but can only spend so much of my own money on these items. Students have been requesting that we have a classroom stash of necessities that they can purchase using our classroom economy!
My Project
I have selected a variety of snacks, fidget toys, and teas so that all students can work in an environment that takes away some of their stressors. Not all students have eaten when they arrive in my classroom and I want to help them power their brains and bodies. Often students feel unwell or stressed, it is important to me that I can offer them tea and validate their feelings.
I am looking forward to re-stashing my stores of food and tea so that students can practice money management and purchase items through our classroom economy.
