My students often reflect a childhood that many people share when growing up in Queens, NY; they come from self-sacrificing families that immigrated here to work odd jobs and make ends meet, all so they can provide their children with the best of what they can manage. As a result, my students come into school already with an immense responsibility to uphold.
Starting from kindergarten up to third grade, my students are expected to meet standards that state they should be reading full sentences, writing personal narratives, and solving math equations when in reality, most of them are just learning English.
The academic pressure on these young individuals weighs heavily on their shoulders and in my heart. Yet, they continue to surprise me with the amazing progress they make from September to June. This can only be a testament to their hard work and unwavering support from their loved ones.
I hope to empower these students with different experiences and tools so that they see their responsibility as a noble one, and, in turn, uncover their inner superheroes to make their families and community proud!
My Project
The dramatic play center in my classroom is always one of the star attractions. Students always enter the area and transform it into these fantastic places they have visited with their family and friends. However, after almost two years of being in quarantine, our learners haven't had the opportunity to explore their community. Instead, they got creative with home activities with the help of our school staff and their amazing families. One of these activities was cooking in the kitchen.
As a result, our students came in with an amazing interest in food!
They constantly chat about different restaurants they see walking through their community on their way to school and the food that students bring in for lunch from home. They bring this knowledge into the classroom and into the dramatic play center as they put together recipes they see at home. They serve their peers with the same love and care their family provides for them.
I am asking for assorted pretend food and accessories so that students have the materials necessary to recreate what they do in their own kitchens with their families. I hope that by having access to these materials, they can fully share their experiences, and we can learn more about their family culture, as well as about food in general as we explore concepts such as where food comes from, what food waste looks like and how to problem solve that, and how we can share our food resources.
