Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students thirst for knowledge and wisdom but often lack the resources to quench their thirst.
We are a business-themed public high school located in the heart of Queens, NY, the most culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhood in the world.
The children who enter my classroom come from all over NYC. As such, they carry with them a wealth of knowledge that contributes to a dynamic classroom. However, many of my students also come from economically disadvantaged homes. Therefore, many times, resources, basic supplies and equipment are scarce.
My Project
Food is love!
Our extracurricular club aims to bring families, students, and staff together, around the table, to learn to cook, spend quality time with each other, and enjoy delicious meals and snacks.
Through our cooking club, we will learn kitchen skills that are necessary to keep us safe and productive while preparing food. In addition, we will create a variety of snacks, meals, and desserts by using existing recipes and also creating some recipes of our own.
One of our main goals is to bring all of our stakeholders together, around food, to help support and increase student achievement. The research is clear; when families remain involved, the children are more likely to succeed.
Furthermore, cooking is a life skill that our students will utilize long after they graduate high school. The memories we will make will last a lifetime!
