My students are from Chester, Pennsylvania and surrounding districts and go to a charter school. This year we opened a new campus in Aston, Pennsylvania and I am teaching 7th grade English Language Arts. This is my second year teaching, and I am excited to work with the same students as last year!
Our new school is a great building, but we are lacking vital resources that many schools have, and in return, it is difficult to provide students with comparable resources to suburban schools.
Our school serves students whose families are all below the poverty line, and each student is eligible for free lunch and breakfast. The Town of Chester has the highest homicide rate in the country, and these students need help from anyone who can.
My Project
This will help my students on a daily basis. Some students take the bus for 2 hours just to get to school and then 2 hours to go home. I need to be able to provide them with food for the ride, especially since many will not have any food when they get home.
Deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste are also needed items to keep the classroom clean and continue to promote good hygiene.
It is hard to teach, and for others to learn when kids have to worry about simple things, that many people take for granted. I know that I am lucky to personally not have to worry about this, but I do worry for my students!
