I teach in an Alaskan village accessible only by bush plane. There are no roads in or out of the community. Most of my students are Inuits . They are inquisitive and naturally curious about the world around them.
I recognize every day that I am teaching the future leaders of this community.
This task has become more challenging in a post-COVID classroom. The academic abilities are drastically different between students, requiring teachers, including myself, to be innovative and creative in how to meet the needs of every student. My students are creative and willing to embrace every challenge. They are naturally curious and excited to learn.
My Project
Our students were only in school for half-days last year and were out of school for two months doing remote learning this year. Being in school all day is taking a toll on them. By about 1:30, I am having most of the kids say that they are hungry or are visibly tired and struggling to finish the day strong. I would like to be able to have some healthy snack options on hand so that they can have a bit to eat and refuel for the rest of the day. This project will help provide snacks to my students facing that afternoon slump. The shopping cart will provide enough snacks that we can get through at least a whole quarter of our school year.
