This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a first year teaching as a 5th-grade inclusion and resource teacher at an elementary school in Atlanta. My students are very unique and because of their disabilities.
My fifth graders live in a low socioeconomic area and attend a Title I school at which 100% of the students receive free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch.
Most of my students live in a urban developments full of violence, gangs, and substandard housing; yet, they have to come to school, focus, and try to learn something new.
My Project
My students have to wait to have lunch until 1:30 PM. With school staring at 8:00 AM, that's over a five hours gap! This makes it a necessity for students to have some kind of snack, but many students are unable to bring a snack due to financial reasons.
Sitting in class hungry causes many problems.
Students can not concentrate during class with their stomach rumbling.
This is an issue because they are paying more attention to how hungry you are, and not about the lesson being taught during class.
The snacks I have listed will help the students fill their empty stomachs and be able to think without the distraction of being hungry.
