I teach at a public school in NYC with a high immigrant population. It is a low income/high poverty area. Despite the learning and economic challenges my students face, they are determined to work hard and succeed in school.
Many of my fifth grade students are learning English as a second language, and some of them also have a learning disability.
I try my best to making learning fun and memorable for them through hands-on activities and projects. However, due to their economic struggles, help is needed to purchase school materials.
My Project
Do you remember what it was like when you were hungry and had to wait until lunch time? It can be difficult to pay attention because your stomach is growling. My students come to school hungry but have a late lunch period. It helps when they can have a working snack during the morning.
Having snacks available will help my students to concentrate on their school work when they feel hungry.
When they behave and complete their classwork, they will be rewarded with having a snack while working. It will also be a way to motivate them to perform their best.
