Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 30 low-income, Hispanic students. My scholars are underprivileged and underestimated. They have so much potential and simply need the resources to get to where they need to be (and beyond!). I wish to equip them with the knowledge necessary to become conscientious global citizens.
In my school's community, Takis Fuego and Hot Cheetos should be their own food group.
My scholars absolutely love junk food and do not at all consider the repercussions of their nutritional decisions. Coming from low-income households, I can sympathize and understand why nutrition is the least of their concerns. However, I believe that my scholars can be the first in their families to break these destructive cycles. There is a high rate of obesity amongst the Hispanic population. In fact, many of my students are already overweight. Knowledge can be a weapon against this health epidemic, and I wish to tackle this issue before they are set in their harmful ways. In addition, these books will open their minds to the injustices of the food industry. My scholars love learning about ways we can help others and preserve the environment. I believe it is my duty as a teacher to foster compassion in these young scholars.
My Project
With the class set of "The Omnivore's Dilemma," scholars will learn to consider the personal and global health implications of their food choices. Not only will scholars learn to be more mindful of what they choose to eat, but they will also learn how these decisions affect the world and its inhabitants. I wish for them to be more mindful of how their actions affect the environment. Together we will read and study the book. I will assign projects and assignments that will help students better understand the material and apply the knowledge to their own lives. They will collaborate, investigate, and discuss various issues regarding the food industry. I want them to get upset and react, especially when they read about the injustices of factory farms. I want them to feel empowered to advocate change and promote justice -- even at the age of 12! It is appalling how easy it is for people, children and adults alike, to brush past an issue we deal with every single day -- food.
I want my scholars to empower others to do the same.
We will create posters and pamphlets to inform the school of these personal and global health implications. We will not limit this knowledge to the classroom but to their homes and communities outside the walls. I believe these materials will help students question deeply and think critically. It is my hope that this knowledge will inspire and motivate my scholars to become conscientious citizens in a culturally diverse, interdependent world.
