Food for Thought: Snacks to Fuel Learning in Autistic Support

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom has a wide range of students on the Autism Spectrum. I focus on my students' abilities, rather than their disabilities. Autism is an everyday challenge for my students, but when given the correct learning environment I feel that they can be very successful.
They also live in a high poverty area in our high, which makes my classroom even more unique, because they may not always have every ting they have and need at home.
Creating a safe and welcoming learning environment is most beneficial for my students. They are eager to learn! We stay busy and work so hard!
We have a high diversity of learners who often times need some sort of tool to be more successful. Despite challenges at home and in the community, my students are enthusiastic, inquisitive, and thoughtful. In my classroom, we work with our students to work hard daily to improve their communication, behavior and academic skills.
My Project
I hope to get my students plenty of snacks such as candy, Goldfish crackers, trail mix and fruit snacks to keep their bellies full while we work our brains while in school. Often times my students come in and are hungry, and having their favorite breakfast item or snack helps provide for them. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Although they have meals at school, it is simply not enough, and often times my students are picky eaters.
I realize snacks do not seem like much but a hungry student cannot focus on anything other than their next meal.
I hope that the donation of snacks can better our school year and keep their minds on their education instead of their next meal. Some of the items will also be sent home with my students, so that they have healthy snacks for at home as well.
