This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are, in a very real sense, artists-in-the-making. Dancers, Actors, Theatre Production Crew, Creative Writers, Musicians and Artists. We've heard that "Schools Kill Creativity," but in many ways, my students defy that.
On the whole, my students show a level of discipline and a drive to express themselves, or they wouldn't focus on the arts to the degree that our school requires (two hours a day).
They are juniors and seniors, many of them acutely aware of the need to develop a broader understanding of the world. Many wonder what they ought to do next in their lives. In times such as these, students have formative experiences in the classroom that set their dispositions toward education in general.
My Project
With these books, chairs, and supplies, our classroom will be well positioned for students to be comfortable and, at the same time, to engage in learning. Some of today's best young adult writers authored the selected books. Included are teen dramas to ground-breaking comics to cutting edge poem-novels written by some of today's best young adult writers.
These books were selected for their high-interest graphics and characters students can either relate to or admire (or both!).
Having comfortable chairs in a necessity and allows several larger students better options for seating. The additional supplies provide students with consumables that allow the class to function more smoothly.
