As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school in my very large district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I strive to create a safe, caring, and inspirational learning environment for them all at all times.
My students are little tornadoes from the moment they enter the classroom, whirling around the room involved in all sorts of learning.
They like to move, they love to be part of our community, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. I hope to create lifelong learners that enjoy their education and strive to be the best that they can be.
My students love goldfish crackers and being able to hand out little packages when they are hungry in the afternoon or during the day. It will be a great pick me up and motivation for them to continue learning.
Students also don't get a ton of fun snacks, so healthy crackers and fruit snacks will be an easy way to help get their blood sugar up so they can continue concentrating on lessons during the day.
A little snack and for students to have the choice of what they would like will entice them into stretching out their attention span just a little more and keep their stomachs full so they can focus on learning and not their rumbling tummies.
