Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During parent-teacher conferences I had a parent come in and say "We have a problem". Being the concerned person I am, I inquired about the matter. The parent said, "Well our son just won't put his book down! Look at what he is doing". The picture was of their son sitting up in a tree, nose in a book that he had gotten from the school library.
My classroom is a community of readers.
We are a visual and performing arts academy with a strong focus on integrating the arts whenever possible. My students are creative, artistic, and curious. They are a very diverse group of learners due to the fact we are a full inclusion school. I have students with exceptionalities on both sides of the spectrum (struggling students to GATE students). When my students come into my classroom the majority of my students don't enjoy reading. That's where I come in. My job is to try and captivate them in a story and turn them into the student who couldn't put their book down. That is what I am trying to do with the materials listed below.
My Project
n the book "The Book Whisper: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child", Donalyn Miller created a list of book that her sixth graders enjoyed and recommended to other students all over the world. These materials are all books from that list. Students will be able to check these books from my classroom library to read in class and at home to improve their reading skills.
We all know how important it is to create lifelong readers.
We can do this by having a variety of books that aline to students interest. I have my own class library, but it needs to expand to include more titles that students will find highly engaging and help foster their love of reading. With these materials, I hope to do just that.
