At our school, every student is greeted by name and has a personal relationship with more than one adult. Academic success comes from a calm environment with cool colors and caring educators. Within the brick walls, students can make mistakes and grow as digital learners. Their rigorous academics in the core math, reading, science and social studies classes keep the scholars on or above pace with the Minnesota State Standards. These students come to school with great potential, and are predicted to be the world's greatest changemakers.
These brilliant minds will work in jobs that have not yet been created.
It is therefore important that they have exposure to the same level of brilliance shown in their successes, in their classroom instruction and materials. Students who have access to supplies can communicate, advocate and persuade their peers. These warriors will transform the world, and make it a place that we can never imagine.
My Project
In the 5th grade, students are growing rapidly, and are often in need of extra food at school. Students who have a small, healthy snack before completing intensive math instruction perform far better than those who are only working off of the small lunch or breakfast provided by the school.
Snacks alleviate headaches, and having no headache alleviates fatigue and low motivation levels.
When students do not have their basic needs met in the classroom through cleaning supplies or food, it is hard to use critical thinking skills. Students cannot work in a classroom that is not cleaned daily with disinfecting wipes. The clean desks will promote a healthy classroom, where food and cleanliness are used to fuel academic success. Even further, the granola bars, crackers and snack mixes will be the fuel students need to begin dividing multi-digit numbers in difficult word problems.
Math is evolving and changing year after year, where 5th grade students are working on material previously only done by high school students. We are molding minds and giving students the collegiate exposure they need, to be effective workers in the future work place. In order to get them thinking like the engineers and accountants that they are, the students need extra fuel to fight through challenging content. Once the students have tapped into their infinite potential though, the rest is history.
