I am a middle school counselor that works with students in grades 6-8. I meet with students individually, in group settings and in classroom settings throughout the school year. Our middle school has a wide range of economic status and has grown in our ethnic diversity.
Given the challenges presented from the pandemic and being a rural community our students have a wide range of challenges they are facing with a limited amount of resources.
My Project
On a daily basis I have students come into my office asking for a snack to fill their growling stomachs and nerves. I have seen through the pandemic we have an increase in students needs for food as well as mental health services.
We have a large percentage of students that struggle with varying levels of anxiety.
Many students request a fidget to help take their mind of what has sent them into a tailspin.
Food and fidgets are my top two requests in my office and this is something I currently have been supplying to students out of my pocket.
