Have you ever met a teenager that didn't have some interest in food? Every year my team does a research unit for both 7th and 8th graders. This year our theme will be food. This theme provides a huge spectrum from which students choose their topic. A sample of topics might include spice trade, food from historical periods studied, the Columbian exhange, fast food, slow food, junk food, pizza, hot dogs, or individualized cultural studies of foods.
Students will be able to study food across cultures and time. The purpose is to provide students with an opportunity to develop research and writing skills by researching high interest topics. No doubt many students will be suprised to find out about the history of foods that many take for granted it.
Students spend 6-8 weeks doing research using Internet and library sources. The culminating product is a display board, power point, or a presentation. A day is scheduled for our team to share the findings of our research and enjoy the work of students.
My proposal is a request for books to add to my social studies classroom library that will provide background information for our research. There are a number of titles students would benefit having in the classroom to review and use for their research projects including The Hungry Planet, Fast Food Nation, and The History of Food just to name a few that would help my students.
Funding my proposal will allow my students easy access to books that many libraries do not have in circulation.
